Since I teach at a year round school, I teach during the summer. (Don't feel too bad for me, I get the whole Spring off while my students are still in school). Our summer school is more academic than the summer schools I went to growing up (that was mostly art and computer class). I get my new students for the year during summer and we hit the ground running starting in June. That means we start literacy centers starting the second week of school. So for those of you who teach summer school OR are looking for some summer-themed centers for the end of the year, I present my latest centers:<br />
<br />
One of the packets I made focuses on synonyms. First, students match sunshine synonyms together and write their answers.<br />

I also created an antonym packet with the same activities as the synonym packet. Students match the antonym sunglasses:<br />

I also created a packet to work on long and short vowels, something I know my newly minted second graders will need a LOT of practice in.</div>

Once students have practiced working with long and short vowels, they will play the memory game concentration by matching either long or short vowel words. Students turn the cards face down, then turn two over at a time. If the cards match (either they are both long vowels or both short vowels) students get to keep the cards. If they don't match, they will be turned back face down.<br />

<span style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">I
am very lucky to have an awesome classroom aide/ science teacher. He
comes in for an hour in the morning and teaches science for an hour twice a
week. I really love having someone teach science separately because good
science instruction takes a lot of prep and I've got my hands full as
it is!</span><br />
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
Anyway,
for those of you who do teach your own science class, my aide thought of
a great way to teach fossils! Also, if you teach Open Court, this is a
great connection to a 2nd grade Open Court unit. (I don't use Open
Court, but I have on good authority this works well). My
students were learning about dinosaurs and how we have learned so much
about them using bones and fossils. My aide was able to get some fossils
online to show the kids and then told them they were going on a dig.
You can imagine how excited they were. </div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
The
kids were shown pictures of the tools used in a fossil dig,
particularly the brushes and picks. the students then got their own
"tools." In order to simulate digging for fossils, the students used
toothpicks (picks), paint brushes (brushes), and chocolate chip cookies.
The cookie portion was the "rock" to dig in and the chips were the
fossils. Once students dug all of the chips/fossils out of the cookie
using the toothpick, they brushed the chips off with the paintbrushes.
The darker the color, meaning the less cookie/rock on it, the better.<br />

<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
The
kids LOVED it! And they also did a good job not eating their fossils.
They were allowed to eat another cookie on their way home for their
restraint. </div>

After a lot of work on personal narrative and opinion writing, we
started to work on non-fiction writing. I really love Hope King's style
and purchased her Polar Bear unit. Check out her Winter Writing Bundle on TeachersPayTeachers <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Ultimate-Winter-Writing-Craft-Bundle-Aligned-to-Common-Core-Standards">by clicking here.</a> It is really cute and my examples
here use her product.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First,
we filled out the K and W in a KWL about polar bears. Using the "want
to know" section, we brainstormed different topics that the kids could
research. I wanted it to be VERY specific so students could manage the
research independently. Once students chose their topic, either habitat,
diet, or body (physical attributes), we went to the computer lab.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If
your students have access to the Internet, National Geographic for kids
has a great website for non-fiction research. I gave students the
direct link to the polar bear page and asked them to find three facts
about their topic, using a simple tree chart to take notes. (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of Hope's super cute sheet).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN_LkpY_BOOTq0d9b5EuGyWUTI9Isg9Gy2EbtkeLIO_6CsyHdxPVwFpSu1ACK290l4A-hYpQAmc-h2EyxwRLXrFKdTGaUbxjRQCWV5Fp3766SVM3ZE2HdwVAm9AOL9YHPUh7iSOH3oTmM/s1600/Picture+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN_LkpY_BOOTq0d9b5EuGyWUTI9Isg9Gy2EbtkeLIO_6CsyHdxPVwFpSu1ACK290l4A-hYpQAmc-h2EyxwRLXrFKdTGaUbxjRQCWV5Fp3766SVM3ZE2HdwVAm9AOL9YHPUh7iSOH3oTmM/s400/Picture+1.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is a screenshot of National Geographic Kids website for polar bear. Click <a href="http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/animals/">here</a> to access the NatGeo Kids animal site.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Next, we used the stoplight paragraph strategy to organize their writing. (<a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2013/04/stoplight-paragraphs-helping-structure.html">Click here to check out how I taught this concept to my students.</a>) They first took the facts that found and wrote them in the supporting details section, highlighting them in yellow. Next, after another class discussion about what a topic sentence is and looking back to our <a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2013/04/stoplight-paragraphs-helping-structure.html">cookies</a> example, I asked students to develop their <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">green</span> topic sentence. The main idea I kept going back to with them was, "what do your facts tell you about the polar bear's (habitat, diet, or physical characteristics). With that in mind, many students were able to do this independently. Many other needed conferences, but that makes sense! Isn't the topic sentence the hardest part for all writers?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsSBIHLo7a7FBrHHocv7zpJymxbk4xJNdgiFrU50Yzgh_aLVh3iFzIQ1TTnTvDBvP5z8DAqITb40XbDjBQ7oxkrd0QDMZxe3G8Py8Omcc4hMWJ9JpUzpX0F9BrP67S-C3LD9qSXd2YEQ/s1600/IMAG0661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsSBIHLo7a7FBrHHocv7zpJymxbk4xJNdgiFrU50Yzgh_aLVh3iFzIQ1TTnTvDBvP5z8DAqITb40XbDjBQ7oxkrd0QDMZxe3G8Py8Omcc4hMWJ9JpUzpX0F9BrP67S-C3LD9qSXd2YEQ/s400/IMAG0661.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once the had their topic sentence, students were asked to write their <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">red</span> closing sentence. Most of them were able to do this once their topic sentence was written.<br />
<br />
After mapping out their writing, the traditional 1st, 2nd, final draft process began. I asked students to write their first draft using the colors to help them practice visualizing their writing, but by the time they were on the 2nd draft they were writing in normal pencil. I used my usual writing conference strategy I wrote about <a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2013/03/writing-conference-strategy.html">here</a> and discovered one other handy trick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VdR_uDMqTQI-80IKZ2P7dWq2qgSaa2d_9orCQsE71U6TDgxwuD_so_yjdwitv6nVf6bswHDElHvsmHfOawOKS4qwKDCZP684loPEcDlRPnKqqSmW49_xV1PnfjrV9gL8jW0N37GVJlQ/s1600/IMAG0613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VdR_uDMqTQI-80IKZ2P7dWq2qgSaa2d_9orCQsE71U6TDgxwuD_so_yjdwitv6nVf6bswHDElHvsmHfOawOKS4qwKDCZP684loPEcDlRPnKqqSmW49_xV1PnfjrV9gL8jW0N37GVJlQ/s320/IMAG0613.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Students who are rewriting another draft often skip lines accidentally. I've found that using an extra piece of paper to stay on the correct line helps kids stay on track.<br />
<br />
I felt that the kids wrote really well and I was very proud of their work! Anyone else have some great writing they would like to share?<br />
<br />
<br />
P.S. Hope King did not ask for any sort of endorsement, I just loved her product and wanted to share how I used in my classroom. Please feel free to use any of my strategies, but if you want to finished product to look as cute as hers, I recommend purchasing the unit. I've loved it and it is totally worth it :)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;">The basic gist is:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;">Green= Topic Sentence, go</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Times;">In order to introduce this concept to my students, we did a shared writing activity about cookies. I wanted to topic to be simple and engaging. Who doesn't love cookies?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;">First we made a quick bubble map of all the things that we knew about cookies. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;">After we filled out our thinking map, I asked students to vote on the three things we wanted to put in our paragraph. I then took out our shared writing paper, and wrote the three sentences under "supporting details." At this point I explained to the students to concept of a stoplight paragraph: In every there is a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f;">topic sentence</span> telling you what the paragraph is about, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f1c232;">supporting details</span> that add details about the topic, and a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">closing sentence</span> that retells what the paragraph was about. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;">The cookie facts that we had voted on were our supporting details: Chocolate chip cookies are chocolaty, they're delicious, and they're sweet. I highlighted them in yellow. Now came the tough part: figuring out a topic sentence that covered all of our details. At first they offered ideas that covered only one detail, like, "Cookies are made of sugar" or "There are chocolate chips in cookies." I asked them to think: "What do all of these facts tell you about cookies?"</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidrCzzR5CwzFxgeRlB_dYUdGNaHbqACxhSYhJ9KpO_hNzl4_ZOUqtjFzEpKoQhqVQ7GMYTYUJ1RknyLLu34qblzi_WLTebj4ogtEhirBDUMKJAsYrJO7tTmJA844x9RMac3lqi7aRUbpM/s1600/IMAG0657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidrCzzR5CwzFxgeRlB_dYUdGNaHbqACxhSYhJ9KpO_hNzl4_ZOUqtjFzEpKoQhqVQ7GMYTYUJ1RknyLLu34qblzi_WLTebj4ogtEhirBDUMKJAsYrJO7tTmJA844x9RMac3lqi7aRUbpM/s400/IMAG0657.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;">They thought for a while and then the hands shot up. I got several more accurate ideas, "Cookies taste sweet," but we decided as a class that "Cookies are fantastic to eat" was the most appropriate.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;">Once we wrote that in green for the topic sentence, I asked them to think of another way to say our topic sentence. One of my funnier students raised his hand and said, "Cookies are yummy in my tummy?" The whole class loved it, so we wrote it in red for the closing sentence. Now that they were exposed to the concept, they were ready for their own non-fiction writing next week.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">I've
been very MIA for the last few weeks! Since I'm on a year round
schedule, I've been preparing to go off track. Man, it is a lot of work!
I aspect extra time packing up my classroom is an organized fashion so I
can find my things easily in June, on top of report cards, parent
meetings, parties, and student awards. Not complaining now since I am
done and on break! </span><br />
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
Before
we went off track, I was working furiously on adverbs with my students.
We first started with sorting different types of adverbs. (You can
check out my post about the process <a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2013/03/teaching-adverbs.html">here</a>). Next I decided to put my
theater training into action. </div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
I
wrote a sentence up on the board with a blank space for an adverb. For
example, I finished my homework__________. At first, I wrote in the
adverbs, focusing on where and when adverbs, the tricky ones. (I
finished my homework <i>yesterday</i>/I finished my homework <i>today </i>or I slept
<i>outside</i>/I slept <i>inside</i>). Then I asked students to come up and act out
the sentences. How would a student look if they finished their homework
yesterday (calm perhaps) vs today (frazzled)? What would sleeping inside
look like vs outside? </div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
Once
they got the idea, I allowed students to come up with their own
adverbs, focusing on the slightly easier "how" adverbs. I wrote the
sentence: The student danced _________. I asked for student volunteers to
fill in the sentence and then I had the entire class act out the
sentence. I wish I had pictures, because they were hilarious! Unfortunately, I was laughing too hard and forgot to grab the camera.</div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
To
wrap up, I asked students how adverbs changed the meaning of the
sentences. What did they notice? Since we have been working on using
details in our writing, many students made the connection to our writing
goals and the lesson (yay). Others just enjoyed thinking about how much
fun language can be.</div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Noteworthy; line-height: 24px;">
Does anyone else have a good strategy for teaching adverbs or parts of speech in general? </div>
<br />

Ms. Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10733088325182239923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142134701394453222.post-13151721181982120092013-03-11T20:26:00.001-07:002013-03-11T20:41:39.110-07:00Teaching Adverbs<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
This past week we've started to dive into adverbs, a fairly tricky concept for my EL students. When I first introduced the concept in the fall, I realized that most of my students don't use them correctly in spoken language ("I walked to the store quick") and I decided to revisit at a later date.<br />
<br />
Now that it is Spring, I found a word sort strategy that has helped introduce the various uses of adverbs. Students sort words according to what the modify in a sentence: "How" adverbs, "Where" adverbs, and "When" adverbs. Once we have sorted the words, I asked students to come up with their own examples of the different types of adverbs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAwISQtr3wPJy2GbaARSD7Ql8vjGUWjTfetBLRzZqpAhOUB9pAR2LLEejn40sPsAVRlzuzScO7N6ycqPnVpafv6NGO3OUf2RG7rWytQ9ceAzaxkdtHbAUD8VnKMdoZ1KnDoNVpLqrUa_E/s1600/IMAG0680.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAwISQtr3wPJy2GbaARSD7Ql8vjGUWjTfetBLRzZqpAhOUB9pAR2LLEejn40sPsAVRlzuzScO7N6ycqPnVpafv6NGO3OUf2RG7rWytQ9ceAzaxkdtHbAUD8VnKMdoZ1KnDoNVpLqrUa_E/s400/IMAG0680.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
"Where" adverbs were the most difficult because the kids got too specific and started naming nouns, but once I gave them a few more examples, they got the hang of it.<br />
<br />
Anyone else have some strategies they use to teach adverbs?<br />
<img src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u378/designbychristi/vintage/sig.png" /></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
With St. Patrick's Day coming up, I've been working hard to make some centers that were relevant to the skills we're working on. I'm finally finished! Yay.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">
For the next few weeks we're working on distinguishing between open and closed syllables. I've noticed that many of my students are struggling to decode multi-syllable words. Some were even having trouble with unfamiliar two-syllable words! I decided we needed some work on breaking words down.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">

One other skill we're working on right now if those lovely common-core aligned adverbs. I created an activity where students modify sentences using either "How," "Where," or "When" adverbs. They write three different adverbs in the same sentence and draw illustrations to show how the adverbs changes the meaning of the sentence.</div>

Recently we've been working on non-fiction writing in my classroom. (More to come on that). During my last few writing projects, students waited in line to have a conference with me at my desk. This caused a lot of behavioral issues. Kids were getting restless and loud, causing students who were still working to be distracted.<br />
<br />
I came up with an easy idea to keep track of who I need to conference with. When students are done with a draft, they write their name up on the board, then go back to their desk, wait for me, and do a quiet "may do." I walk around to the students who signed up for "appointments" on the board. When I finish with one student I check off their name and go to the next student. This is a much quieter way than I had before, students always have a task to do, and it allows the slower workers to focus on their writing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you have a strategy you use during writing that you would like to share?</div>

When I was looking around on Pinterest for a Valentine's Day art project, I found Green Bay Art Room's <a href="http://greenbayartroom.blogspot.com/2008/09/5th-grade-jim-dine-hearts.html">post</a> about creating Jim Dine Hearts. I ran out of time to do it before Valentines Day, but I loved the idea so much I did it this week. I must admit, I kinda fudged some of the aspects of her lesson, mostly because I teach 2nd, not 5th, but I feel that they turned out very well!<br />
<br />
First I showed students examples of the project. What did they notice about the shapes? The colors? I explained to them that they would create new shapes within their hearts by drawing intersecting oblique lines (brought in that math vocab). Then they would color each new shape in different patterns and colors.<br />
<br />
First, I had students draw their hearts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBxY55PA668q8UoWlfl2Lcn2iHYYFchTfXD3SweiFtu1DxZt2tlYu7yAP07v1T0Zl6DR1oVLTGwEnZ5CamesP2J01AGndlnmhwz7ZpPQ-KUNbLfiOHaQGCkGYpHBoIhqgVrbkoxsK90M/s1600/IMAG0665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqBxY55PA668q8UoWlfl2Lcn2iHYYFchTfXD3SweiFtu1DxZt2tlYu7yAP07v1T0Zl6DR1oVLTGwEnZ5CamesP2J01AGndlnmhwz7ZpPQ-KUNbLfiOHaQGCkGYpHBoIhqgVrbkoxsK90M/s320/IMAG0665.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Then they took yardsticks and made intersecting lines. (Although I warned them to make as few lines as possible so they had large spaces to color, some did not follow those directions).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjl-8GsuOyLlbhENjGEc8aYVYeRenQxRMVpGflLUFzxqf7V-1zSlpPZwmSryHZYt6IArE0HbpZs9ChqkDktLslN2F9kAweJhAKNl-gZZmonxT__Hf3WEV1NS8UHFEw8xfU-yKEYN-gyJ4/s1600/IMAG0666.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjl-8GsuOyLlbhENjGEc8aYVYeRenQxRMVpGflLUFzxqf7V-1zSlpPZwmSryHZYt6IArE0HbpZs9ChqkDktLslN2F9kAweJhAKNl-gZZmonxT__Hf3WEV1NS8UHFEw8xfU-yKEYN-gyJ4/s320/IMAG0666.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once they were done creating the lines, they started to color. They used oil pastels, which I love because of the rich color and ability to blend.<br />

One of the more challenging things I find about managing centers is to help get students back on task while also running my own small group. For a long time I would stop what I was doing with my group to get the attention of the class to remind them of the expected behaviors. This was very frustrating and I felt that my group work suffered on the more squirrely days.<br />
<br />
My principal suggested I find a way to remind students to end off-task behaviors without stopping instruction and work during centers. I tried flicking the lights, erasing tally marks for off task behaviors, but I still felt that is was more disruptive than helpful. I finally went out and bought a rain stick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8emEVU9NxuLFdoj4AWFtDeFjVFRIhxXL7NYX6XagohvJjUCLThf06hk7WRdHDhMJJ71oHPyaNPeEDANlLQedelizlROlQtJv8afrfp-f_eni_uZoFmuATmD0-c6xjmYbD1iKnbyyeaoU/s1600/IMAG0659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8emEVU9NxuLFdoj4AWFtDeFjVFRIhxXL7NYX6XagohvJjUCLThf06hk7WRdHDhMJJ71oHPyaNPeEDANlLQedelizlROlQtJv8afrfp-f_eni_uZoFmuATmD0-c6xjmYbD1iKnbyyeaoU/s400/IMAG0659.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When students are talking too much or are off task, I turn over the rainstick. They have two turns to quiet down before they lose a marble. It is quiet enough that it isn't completely disruptive, but loud enough that it reminds students what they should be doing.<br />
<br />
I take it to my small group area and I don't have to leave the group to help manage behavior! I love it :) It has been so successful, I've been using it during independent work times as well.<br />
<br />
Does anyone else have a "refocus" strategy they would like to share?<br />

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today I was planning my word work for the next couple weeks and I realized how much my word work instruction has changed from when I first started teaching. When I began I was so overwhelmed that I spent a lot of time working from a (mediocre) basal reading program. Since I've shifted to word study and guided reading, my students have progressed much faster and I am a happier teacher!<br />
<br />
During my guided reading groups I take notes about what I notice with my students. Is there a particular skill they are lacking? Is there a tricky vowel or diphthong that is troubling? What about comprehension strategies? I use these notes to guide my centers and instruction for the next week. I find it a very effective way of targeting the needs of my students. My students were a little weirded out when they saw me taking notes at first, but now they're totally used to it.<br />

Happy three-day weekend to everyone! (At least I hope everyone has at least a three-day weekend).<br />
<br />
When I was deciding what we should work on the shortened week after President's Day, I started to think about some of the background knowledge that I have been assuming my students have. I realized there were two (rather glaring) skills that I needed to work on.<br />
<br />
First, my students need to focus on the difference between fact and opinion. As we have been diving into those super tough common core comprehension standards, I have been seeing that students were often stating their opinions as facts, using their schema to make assumptions about the readings that were not supported by the text. I realized that we needed to work on differentiating between the two.<br />
<br />
I started off by explaining that facts are something that are always true, and opinions are how you or someone else <i>feels</i> about something. I gave a few examples of each and had students sort as a class (all written on sentence strips-I wish I had a picture!). Then students broke into a turn-and-talk and came up with their own examples of facts and opinions. For centers, students worked on the President's Day fact and opinion sort. All statements are centered around Lincoln, Washington, and the President's Day Holiday. My hope is as they practice this they will be better able to analyze text with evidence rather than just their opinion.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second skill I realized that I needed to work on with my students was the difference between the suffixes -er and -est. My students are primarily ELL and often have difficulty with distinguishing these subtleties in English. Most students would always use the word "better" instead of "best" in their writing and omit "-est" words in spoken language all together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To teach this concept I brought three students to the front of the classroom. Student A was tall. I gave her a card with the word "tall" written on it. Student B was taller. I gave him a card with the word "taller" written on it. When I brought up Student C (the tallest) I asked students how we would describe Student C. Most students said taller, rather than offering tallest as the answer. I explained that when there are more than 2 things being compared, the word ends in the suffix "est." I handed Student C a card with the word "tallest" on it. I then wrote up on the board: -er means more, comparing only 2 things. -est means most, comparing 3 or more things. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My practiced this idea with a few more adjectives: small, sad, and happy. We thought of examples of things that could be small, something smaller, and something smallest. It was hard at first for students to think of the least extreme example first, but they got the hang of it by happy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They practiced the concept during centers using the President's Day -er, -est suffix activity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It's coming... the second most tiring day as an elementary teacher... VALENTINES DAY!<br />
<br />
I have been gearing up for weeks since I love teaching with themes and I LOVE valentines day. Seriously, even when I was single, I loved all the pink and red and sweets :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, tomorrow my students are making Valentine Mailboxes out of shoeboxes. Today I made my prototype that they students can use an example. Obviously I expect them to add more fun, like glitter, patterns, etc, but this is the basic gist of what they will do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO0Fjp841oS3qZFLJsUb-6qTEqTX3d5dQFBu18NtwYTLfq0nIv-xESBiKQlZo8OJlaZVm4QzRnL9RLeOUnH7iTGzrI-Ay0HlbrQLcbyPISVNjCM_fw_9VC6DB6vo2bLCAWy3gjkep4lQw/s1600/IMAG0624.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO0Fjp841oS3qZFLJsUb-6qTEqTX3d5dQFBu18NtwYTLfq0nIv-xESBiKQlZo8OJlaZVm4QzRnL9RLeOUnH7iTGzrI-Ay0HlbrQLcbyPISVNjCM_fw_9VC6DB6vo2bLCAWy3gjkep4lQw/s400/IMAG0624.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step One: Start with an ordinary shoe box</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj-FRwL_xZC9JyDAUHDhvhGu5yGz-Yh8jnlymupVFZ3vUZWWSnuX61Hrp7RsHWigP6FAOnAX7hp7QCjoyvM7qS55DYpk8sW4prZEzdNeZAvxLMlN1OiK7CH-E1Q0rPmBh6tjSrqgaq0Zs/s1600/IMAG0623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj-FRwL_xZC9JyDAUHDhvhGu5yGz-Yh8jnlymupVFZ3vUZWWSnuX61Hrp7RsHWigP6FAOnAX7hp7QCjoyvM7qS55DYpk8sW4prZEzdNeZAvxLMlN1OiK7CH-E1Q0rPmBh6tjSrqgaq0Zs/s320/IMAG0623.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step Two: Cover with a paper of your choice. I chose to put glue on the surface, cover each surface separately, and cut off the excess. This helps the box be able to open and close (rather than if I wrapped it like a present and would keep the lid shut).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0o4zjJf-FdqODC8S7qr-2x0BWGn06SgjonxQakKw0urtFdqWUg72vuuLpL_K9reaGPuGQTlnmacdNzI5MmFzTipHbM8VDqSu3I9khq6xH-wlKkQVzDGDaQBTMdbtg8GEbW0lMYYZnTjQ/s1600/IMAG0625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0o4zjJf-FdqODC8S7qr-2x0BWGn06SgjonxQakKw0urtFdqWUg72vuuLpL_K9reaGPuGQTlnmacdNzI5MmFzTipHbM8VDqSu3I9khq6xH-wlKkQVzDGDaQBTMdbtg8GEbW0lMYYZnTjQ/s320/IMAG0625.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step Three: Add a red flag on the side to make it look like a mailbox. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step Four: Decorate! Glitter, stickers, more paper strips, go crazy! (And maybe clean up the edges a bit. Looks like I'll need to do that for my example tomorrow).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Valentine's Day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Happy Sunday everyone!<br />
<br />
I wrote a few months ago about the website Reading A-Z where you can print off leveled books for your guided reading. <a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2012/11/guided-reading-reading-z.html">Click here to read about how I use it in the classroom.</a><br />
<br />
It is a great resource for cash-strapped schools, but the major downside is that making the books is a big pain! The way I have worked this out is sending the books home with parents to make. (Parents are always asking how how to help and this is a GREAT help for me).<br />
<br />
Because it is pretty tricky, I created step-by-step instructions with pictures like the ones below so there is a clear way to make them. It has helped a lot and really cut down on prep for me!<br />
<br />

If you haven't heard any songs from Wake Up! check out this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZpCrdU4iRY">link for my favorite song, Hard Times.</a> This is MY JAM! I really rock out on my hour long commute to work.</div>

I also can't believe I'm done the 3 week in March! Before anyone gets too upset, I'll be back to work mid-June, so I work that same amount of time, I just get Spring off instead of Summer. It does mean my trip to Paris with my man is slightly cheaper, so that is nice.<br />
<br />
Pumpkin Spice Lattes are Gods Gift. Enough said. Come on Starbucks, get with the program!<br />
<br />
My boyfriend and I moved into our San Francisco apartment in July and we haven't totally figured out the best way to organize all our stuff. Our closet is embarrassing! That is project number one for this "Summer Break."<br />
<br />
As I mentioned above, I have an hour commute. Ugh. That makes those tailgating, driving on the shoulder to avoid traffic jerks that much worse. I want to yell at them: "You may drive a fancy BMW, but my prius beats you in gas mileage EVERY DAY!" I shouldn't complain, living in San Francisco is truly wonderful. I live a 20 minute walk from this:<br />

I'm not sure about all of you, but there are a few skills that, no matter how much time they spent on it in first grade, my students STILL need extra support in. Particularly Parts of Speech, Money, and the Calendar. Some of this is due to the fact that I have a majority English Language Learner class and some of it is because it is just DIFFICULT.<br />
<br />
I decided to create a "Concept Board." I use it as a place to put visual reminders of some of the more difficult concepts we're working on in class. If students can't remember what a pronoun is, they look to the concept board. When we're adding different types of coins and are confused between a nickel and dime, they look to the board. It's helped a lot during independent work. As their needs change, so does the board.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHXFl3Ibygj_Us-k71WbNygwCqEDdZ8Ph0kfw0sFcsOH-oxHRgYaM4g4nMXxcbKENuRe94rRf9NLW6JWtMupTv0q4Fi1yJkJC1RlyCqHW9u7NVOqf4gczYHAyML5zomEYtfucXeurUT4/s1600/IMAG0616.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHXFl3Ibygj_Us-k71WbNygwCqEDdZ8Ph0kfw0sFcsOH-oxHRgYaM4g4nMXxcbKENuRe94rRf9NLW6JWtMupTv0q4Fi1yJkJC1RlyCqHW9u7NVOqf4gczYHAyML5zomEYtfucXeurUT4/s400/IMAG0616.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My classroom is <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">tiny</span> so I used one of my dry erase boards for the board. I'm really glad I did.<br />

Seasonal based activities are pretty irrelevant in California. We don't have fall (really), we don't get snow, and it is colder in the summer than in the spring (at least in San Francisco). That being said, I still enjoy the activities and when I saw <a href="http://greenbayartroom.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2008-09-17T11%253A28%253A00-05%253A00&max-results=9">this</a> post on how to teach value with snowmen, I knew I had to try it.<br />
<br />
The lesson focuses on two aspects of art: perspective and value. First, students draw the outline of a snowman. I told students to try to draw a snowman from a different perspective. They tried making a "close up" of their face, what the snowman would look like from above, from below. Some students got this immediately, others really struggled. In retrospect, I will teach that concept in an earlier lesson when I can focus just on playing around with this idea.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDpC8W5M2GhGM8Vly4NWFG-gBOFj2BjpattAHAclw0IGxOxiW__UkX9APKKe9DFkMCDMmSDM91vcQ9XwEiu_puU3MpISCZX7-7Opo9wu5_E6BuRQj3dC23HR7yU1SMQn_KmLTYhBT2Kjc/s1600/IMAG0576.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDpC8W5M2GhGM8Vly4NWFG-gBOFj2BjpattAHAclw0IGxOxiW__UkX9APKKe9DFkMCDMmSDM91vcQ9XwEiu_puU3MpISCZX7-7Opo9wu5_E6BuRQj3dC23HR7yU1SMQn_KmLTYhBT2Kjc/s320/IMAG0576.jpg" width="191" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Drawing the outline of the snowman as if we are looking from below</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Next, students did the shading to create the value with colored pencils. In order to do this, students must choose two colors next to each other on the color wheel, one lighter than the other. Then students shade the very edge of their snowmen with the dark color, pressing very hard. Next, they take that same darker color and shade inwards, but pressing lighter. Last, they take the lighter color and continue to shade inwards, pressing lightly. The lightest color shades pretty far into the snowman. This creates the pretty color of the snowmen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKzWPnj6RyrayLJITDlRzhitYpoyxhFW0eo2Bfltmm7M6OJ7rIqe-EY__ippip2CCNSxWhzFa7m2-TRxrmsP4Bi9zExINV1JTu9qoV4jUHMViOl9OrSy6Kk5YC-L8xgaywaI-acF4fQKk/s1600/IMAG0580.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKzWPnj6RyrayLJITDlRzhitYpoyxhFW0eo2Bfltmm7M6OJ7rIqe-EY__ippip2CCNSxWhzFa7m2-TRxrmsP4Bi9zExINV1JTu9qoV4jUHMViOl9OrSy6Kk5YC-L8xgaywaI-acF4fQKk/s320/IMAG0580.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Once they have finished shading, students added their details and backgrounds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0AwCQOgNOyvuClW0yAWO3S7L60ngTxplprLLxy7ojmeJF0laxzt_pCQs0hrz5ak8JRtohPXWhncG_VjhpTlgxoE4RRVJtwUEiPAsKvBQLOr-r5LCgx6VNcsF7Cuv2p7LLMzz8PyaxKVg/s1600/IMAG0594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0AwCQOgNOyvuClW0yAWO3S7L60ngTxplprLLxy7ojmeJF0laxzt_pCQs0hrz5ak8JRtohPXWhncG_VjhpTlgxoE4RRVJtwUEiPAsKvBQLOr-r5LCgx6VNcsF7Cuv2p7LLMzz8PyaxKVg/s320/IMAG0594.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Again, I should have focused JUST on value with the students. It was a lot to take in and I think students would've been able to focus more on how to shade if they weren't already focusing on the perspective aspect. Still, I feel like the snowmen turned out really cute and the students were very proud of their work.<br />

Recently I hooked up with a second grade teacher at a school across town to develop a penpal program. I wasn't sure how it was going to go, particularly since my students have been really struggling with letter writing, but they have been LOVING it! When they got their first letter I gave them almost a half an hour to read them, share them with others, and generally be excited. I am so glad I did. They were so hyped up about the letters there is no way they would have been productive.<br />
<br />
The next day the students responded to their penpals. I've never heard my classroom so quiet. They wrote pages upon pages to their penpals, which blew me away. (Getting many of my students to extend their writing in like pulling teeth). One of my students even wrote, "You are the greatest penpal ever. I think we can be best friends, don't you?" So adorable.<br />
<br />
If any teachers out there are struggling with letter writing, I highly recommend a penpal program. If you can't do it with another second grade teacher in a different school, maybe talk to an upper-grade teacher about it. I can't rave any more about the motivation I saw with my students.<br />

So a couple months ago I saw a great post on Yvonne Dixon's blog <a href="http://sassyinsecond.blogspot.com/2012/12/gingerbread-fun-and-freebie.html">Sassy in Second</a> about Christmas Wreath Stained Glass. I loved the idea, but December was so jam packed that I could not find the time to fit in. I kept it in the back of my mind and we did a modified version last week.<br />
<br />
First, I cut circles out in colored cardstock, cut out the the middle, and laminated them to created the "glass" surface.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDdAC2ZgPpl355HDtv4jJ8BDnlgb8kvCYRHh9sirU1Z5fOIgGYt4_oDus9DiZWteQuyjByM7X0GpJ95CCdWkJpRiRBssBHyjhHU4C_qeMfTlpp2ebU0ARdlhk1DXHoE5X9xG51_faS3Vg/s1600/IMAG0561.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDdAC2ZgPpl355HDtv4jJ8BDnlgb8kvCYRHh9sirU1Z5fOIgGYt4_oDus9DiZWteQuyjByM7X0GpJ95CCdWkJpRiRBssBHyjhHU4C_qeMfTlpp2ebU0ARdlhk1DXHoE5X9xG51_faS3Vg/s320/IMAG0561.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next, I photocopied a white piece of paper with circles for the students to create the own designs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifAa4717DsR8CsY_r0vCQss_ukeLTJ5FQwSBoyIgNn4ZpJutKWTYiFGs3WrSRth5Lgewf9n5i4jvX176CmdOuCEJBS8Vr0eNAStcqLowEIA4IhuqttIuT9KSudf3C9ouh5RFycbyaHjy4/s1600/IMAG0563.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifAa4717DsR8CsY_r0vCQss_ukeLTJ5FQwSBoyIgNn4ZpJutKWTYiFGs3WrSRth5Lgewf9n5i4jvX176CmdOuCEJBS8Vr0eNAStcqLowEIA4IhuqttIuT9KSudf3C9ouh5RFycbyaHjy4/s400/IMAG0563.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifAa4717DsR8CsY_r0vCQss_ukeLTJ5FQwSBoyIgNn4ZpJutKWTYiFGs3WrSRth5Lgewf9n5i4jvX176CmdOuCEJBS8Vr0eNAStcqLowEIA4IhuqttIuT9KSudf3C9ouh5RFycbyaHjy4/s1600/IMAG0563.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I showed students examples of stained glass, but geometric patterns as well as landscapes and still-lives. I did a google image search, it was pretty easy. (I would post examples, but I don't own the rights). I showed students an example of my own work as well so they could get ideas for their own work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFN1X5rpEUBP_ExKvX5lPEphid91X8eTPXBVSGFEOsgIOpbUKkeqW15JbgOd7n4k-N8ap2PIMLFVOQHVIvI-BK2r8IJ5cCS_VKFTY-s_7a4m3B6KkSkn3Xvt7Vh1BMAB8FsrJMcHHbE3I/s1600/IMAG0564.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFN1X5rpEUBP_ExKvX5lPEphid91X8eTPXBVSGFEOsgIOpbUKkeqW15JbgOd7n4k-N8ap2PIMLFVOQHVIvI-BK2r8IJ5cCS_VKFTY-s_7a4m3B6KkSkn3Xvt7Vh1BMAB8FsrJMcHHbE3I/s400/IMAG0564.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next, student made their own design on the white paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrn-FfzTU4USgyLhb2l33m9DhDRVnZvXdt9NH2JGk-dY-mRFRMt3vqbCvyp3QU31pFdvvn1o9wpRBep37CjLiiH1z47_8yH2yU5qfn-SUaJTWUML3K9KiX06ZDbjJZ8Dc33EczKwfj9A/s1600/IMAG0566.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrn-FfzTU4USgyLhb2l33m9DhDRVnZvXdt9NH2JGk-dY-mRFRMt3vqbCvyp3QU31pFdvvn1o9wpRBep37CjLiiH1z47_8yH2yU5qfn-SUaJTWUML3K9KiX06ZDbjJZ8Dc33EczKwfj9A/s320/IMAG0566.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrpdNLhc_T1Z9LPPKNyiYa16U4DLed0b0mDdKeTUHuvRWg0E3HEACi3QxQ5HnKpGFqmDC_M5UfiMc4zrbjRmFPc25d1v6pngf-ycvzE0NsupCEu43KK47Cnk2Yw6l-DSeeCDJTvQyH1Rw/s1600/IMAG0567.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrpdNLhc_T1Z9LPPKNyiYa16U4DLed0b0mDdKeTUHuvRWg0E3HEACi3QxQ5HnKpGFqmDC_M5UfiMc4zrbjRmFPc25d1v6pngf-ycvzE0NsupCEu43KK47Cnk2Yw6l-DSeeCDJTvQyH1Rw/s320/IMAG0567.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When they finished, I gave them their "glass". They used a black permanent marker to trace the pattern of the glass (must be permanent so the color doesn't smear).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoyL3JbBkdcbU3lsF_I3u8HccaepY6aKPMW2K3HVEtPPUuaWYRz0Q2RnOnkJWq5vVFlu5p0GMRTfqN4NWPjiaRDHWQLOP2c1DAoggD2zqQ89G9wovOK7sm9F04FMp64-e-5CeDcrxd-Jc/s1600/IMAG0568.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoyL3JbBkdcbU3lsF_I3u8HccaepY6aKPMW2K3HVEtPPUuaWYRz0Q2RnOnkJWq5vVFlu5p0GMRTfqN4NWPjiaRDHWQLOP2c1DAoggD2zqQ89G9wovOK7sm9F04FMp64-e-5CeDcrxd-Jc/s320/IMAG0568.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
For the last step students colored in their stained glass creations. They turned out really beautiful!<br />

<br />
P.S. If you want to find some cheaper permanent markers in bulk, I found some on <a href="http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=24238&keyword=permanent%20markers&scategoryid=0&CategorySearch=&Brand=&Price=">discount school supply.</a> They are perfect for this kind of art project.<br />

I'm back!!!! So I got the <i>dreaded</i> flu over Winter Break and was feeling under the weather pretty much since New Years. I've finally got my groove back (and gotten my work-load under control) and I am ready to start blogging again. I can't believe it's been almost 20 days! I guess sleeping 11 hours a day doesn't allow for much else other than work. Hope most of you avoid it!<br />
<br />
So we have been working on prefix and suffix word work since December. As first I wasn't sure how to approach it, but after a few trial and errors I found one strategy for them.<br />
<br />
First, I give a few examples of words with the prefix or suffix I am targeting. For example: <b>re</b>view, <b>re</b>charge, <b>re</b>do. We as a class define the words and look for what each word have in common. In this set of words we realize that all of these words mean to "do something again." From that I ask the students, what could the prefix "re" mean? Once it has been established that "re" means again, I follow the same routine with another prefix or suffix.<br />
<br />
The next step is a word sort. I write base words on index cards and students help me sort the words according to the appropriate prefix or suffix.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxzncJnx1aB4mZ1Up7n6pnWKlKGmt-CylliObx5ayi1QFOzu9Vhy5rYLJAANYQMxv70HUsbtJ_cduFUKyfuCHAEuvZfT_avR7G7C0w_3-gJnYRkHr3K9gJz-1KohiosUKVKCDuH2Fl9k/s1600/IMAG0526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxzncJnx1aB4mZ1Up7n6pnWKlKGmt-CylliObx5ayi1QFOzu9Vhy5rYLJAANYQMxv70HUsbtJ_cduFUKyfuCHAEuvZfT_avR7G7C0w_3-gJnYRkHr3K9gJz-1KohiosUKVKCDuH2Fl9k/s400/IMAG0526.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously, some words can be put in both categories, but each time we choose where to put the base word we discuss the meaning of the word. Once we have sorted all the words, I ask students to brainstorm more words with the target prefixes and suffixes. Students then do the same activity during literacy centers. I've found that dissecting the words in this active way has really reinforced the concept with the students and they're using the prefixes/suffixes as a strategy during reading.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyone else with good ideas for the prefix/suffix concept?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

New year... new centers...<br />
<br />
After taking a lovely week or so off, I'm back to work on my literacy centers for January. My January theme is all things Winter, although we don't have a lot of snow in California, I still think snowmen are adorable so they still make an appearance in my classroom. I've only made two centers so far, trying to pace myself, but I'm excited to have a jump on things!<br />
<br />
My first is a phonics activity I created using the philosophies I blogged about <a href="http://savvyinsecond.blogspot.com/2012/12/phonics.html">here</a>. Students sort words that start with Hard C & Soft C, Hard G & Soft G. For those who, like me, are still learning some of these rules, Hard C is /ck/, Soft C is /s/, Hard G is /g/, and Soft G is /j/.<br />
